Definition: A tree view or an outline view is a graphical user interface approach that presents a hierarchical view of entries from a database. Each item (referred to as a branch or node) can have a number of subitems that may be displayed as indentations in a list.

What this means: A long list of items may be initially presented to the user as a higher level short list that may be expanded under a single item to reveal only that item’s subitems,  If the list is expanded for an item, the subitems may be hidden/collapsed.  This expanding and collapsing gives the user control over how much detail in long lists is displayed at one time and makes very lengthy lists more manageable.
