Definition: Identity theft occurs when personal information (such as name, Social Security number, credit and bank account numbers, driver’s license numbers, and access codes or passwords) is obtained by unauthorized individuals, who then use that information to commit fraud, theft, or other crime. Identity theft can result when a computer or network does not have adequate security measures.
